Rutherglen Glencairn star left gutted by defeat that leaves Glens fighting uphill relegation battle

Rutherglen Glencairn defender Mick O'Byrne says the Hamish B. Allan Stadium side can only focus on themselves in their hunt for survival.

Glens head into their final game of the West of Scotland Football League Premier Division season in the relegation zone after a controversial 2-1 defeat to Kirkintilloch Rob Roy last Saturday.

Fraser Malcolm's late goal wasn't enough after referee Ross Clark dished out a red card to Glens' Tam Miller after 12 minutes for an alleged handball.

Two penalties were also given to Rutherglen's visitors and it now leaves them relying on favours this Saturday. A loss would all but relegate them, with manager Willie Harvey then needing Darvel to fail in their Lowland League promotion bid.

15th-placed Glenafton Athletic still could leapfrog the side in 14th with three games in hand while Largs Thistle a spot above Glencairn would also need to not win any of their remaining matches.

Despite their backs being against the wall, O'Byrne hopes his team can pull off a great escape.

He said: "Some of the decisions throughout the season have baffled me. I have been playing the game for a long time and I don't know the rules anymore.

"I don't know what is and what isn't a penalty. It used to be cut and dry and I didn't understand the red card either. It was a massive game and we were on the back foot from the off.

"The boys did well. It's tough to take but we have another game to play. We just need to try and take the three points."
