Russell Martin delivers Swansea City midfielder verdict amid Leeds United transfer speculation

Flynn Downes has been linked with a move to Premier League side Leeds United.

The midfielder has enjoyed a successful first season in Wales having arrived from Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window.

While Swansea have been unable to replicate the form that earned them a trip to Wembley in the play-off final last season, there have been signs of progress under Martin in recent weeks.

A thrilling 4-4 draw on Monday afternoon, involving a late dramatic comeback from Reading, stretched the teams unbeaten run to seven games.

Martin is hopeful that the likes of Downes will remain with the Welsh club and that their recent results have shown the value of targeting young players in the transfer window.

Despite a poor first half of the campaign, the Swansea boss believes the side is finding its groove now that the team has settled into his style of football.

Martin hopes that the success of Downes could convince others to join the club in the years to come.

“He has a great relationship with all of the coaching staff and players. He’s really well respected and I think the fans really like him,” said Martin, via Wales Online.

“I think that counts a lot for someone like Flynn, after the tough time he had last year, I don’t think it’s just about jumping at any opportunity. 

“Ultimately we haven’t had any phone calls from anyone. If we do then we’ll have to cross that bridge when it comes to it.

“That was part of our remit when we came in, to try to bring in some younger players who would help the club and evolve, and improve them whilst we’re doing it. 

“So far he’ll be brilliant evidence for other players if they’re looking at other clubs, they’ll maybe earn more money elsewhere.
