Ruben Amorim told to change Manchester United player's position after just one match

Robbie Savage has called on Ruben Amorim to reposition Alejandro Garnacho as wing-back in his new-look Manchester United side.

Garnacho was named as one of two attacking midfielders in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Portman Road, in what was a change to the wide right and left positions he had become accustomed to under Erik ten Hag.

However, Savage believes the 20-year-old would be better suited to one of the wingback roles in the 3-4-2-1 system the Portuguese tactician is trying to implement at Old Trafford.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday, Savage said: "I don’t think Ruben Amorim’s system suits Alejandro Garnacho. He was used as one of the number tens. I think he is better as one of the wing-backs."

Since debuting for the first team in April 2022, Garnacho has made 105 appearances for the Reds and established himself as a key player under Ten Hag prior to the Dutchman's sacking.

United had given Amorim the dream start to his managerial career in the Premier League as Marcus Rashford opened the scoring after less than two minutes.

However, the Reds were pegged back midway through the first half when Omari Hutchinson's curling effort beat Andre Onana from range.

Speaking after the game, Amorim said: "They were trying, they were thinking too much during the game and that is normal. We start very well but then we should have more possession with the ball, kept the ball and sometimes we had the ball in defence and the rest of the guys were too stuck because they were thinking, 'where should I be?'
