Ruben Amorim told he has free pass to sell players after Liverpool draw

Alan Shearer claims Ruben Amorim has a “free pass” to sell any Manchester United players who fail to sustain the level they showed against Liverpool.

After a dire run of form which included four successive defeats, United clinched a surprise 2-2 draw at Anfield in Sunday's Premier League clash. The action-packed encounter initially saw the Red Devils take the lead courtesy of a Lisandro Martinez thunderbolt.

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah responded by putting the league leaders ahead, before Amad netted the well-deserved equaliser, while Harry Maguire missed a late chance to seal a surprise win. But the result marked more than just a point as United’s players finally displayed the necessary dedication and skill to execute Amorim's tactics – two months into his tenure.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer expressed his admiration for United's display. But the all-time Premier League top goalscorer warned that any player reverting to their previous standards risks being shown the door.

Shearer said: “I thought Man United were excellent. What I would say is that they’ve now set their standard. That was without doubt their best performance. I was really impressed with them.

“They’ve been under the cosh, they’ve been criticised left, right and centre but when you put in a performance like that. They looked up for it and organised. There were some brilliant performances.”

Podcast co-host Gary Lineker asked: “United fans will be saying ‘that’s the commitment we want to see week in week out'. Fair?”
