Ruben Amorim has already had the green light from Roy Keane to make Man United tactical tweak

Almost five years after Bruno Fernandes swapped Sporting Lisbon for Manchester United, Ruben Amorim looks set to follow in his fellow countryman's footsteps.

Amorim is on the brink of becoming United's new manager after the club agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon to secure the services of the 39-year-old.

On Tuesday, Sporting confirmed United had expressed interest in triggering his €10million (£8.3m) release clause. It is understood a deal is now in place for him to succeed Erik ten Hag.

As has been well-documented over the last few days, Amorim has enjoyed plenty of success during his time in the Portuguese capital by deploying a 3-4-3 formation. Heavily reliant on wing-backs to both attack and defend, it has become the former Braga chief's go-to system.

United are crying out for a manager that remains wedded to his principles. Ten Hag struggled to install a recognisable identity during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Talk of Amorim installing his preferred 3-4-3 system, however, has already generated plenty of questions, not least about the possible makeup of United's midfield. The Reds played with a three-man midfield system throughout Ten Hag's tenure and the prospect of it being transformed to a two-man operation under Amorim is as intriguing as it is exciting.
