RTÉ GAA Podcast: Tyrrell and Tubridy preview leagues

Jackie Tyrrell, David Tubridy and Michael Foley of the Sunday Times join Mikey Stafford and Rory O'Neill to look ahead to the weekend's action.

It is the opening weekend of the Allianz Hurling League and the number of new managers does add intrigue to a competition that has seen its reputation take a bit of a buffeting in recent years.

Jackie is intrigued to see how Derek Lyng gets on in his first year as Brian Cody's successor in Kilkenny, with his old team-mate expecting to see an emphasis placed on youth.

Cork open against Limerick, which in recent seasons would suggest two points for the Rebels, as John Kiely's priorities have not been on the warm-up competition in recent years.

The league's issue, reckons Michael, is hurling's lack of a middle class to push the top teams. Unlike in football, there are few ambitious counties to challenge the established order, so the competition lacks jeopardy.

That said the likes of Henry Shefflin in Galway and Darragh Egan in Wexford will make good use of the league, even if they have no real ambition to win it.

Retired Clare forward and all-time leading scorer in the Allianz Football League David Tubridy joins us to discuss round 2 of the league, where the intrigue and jeopardy in Division 2 just goes up a notch.

In the top tier, Tyrone v Donegal and Armagh v Mayo stand out as a pair of potentially significant and exciting matches.

David gives us some insight into the strength and conditioning work being done at this time of the year, while we also discuss the latest in the Glen-Kilmacud saga.
