RTÉ GAA Podcast: Spillane on provincial final weekend

After a provincial football final weekend of two halves, Pat Spillane and Niall McCoy join Mikey Stafford and Rory O'Neill to look back on a disappointing Saturday and an entertaining Sunday.

While the Munster and Leinster finals were very one-sided on Saturday, there was lots to enjoy on Sunday as Galway beat Roscommon in a shootout and Derry got the better of Donegal in extra-time (just don't tell Pat it was intriguing).

Derry have the athleticism, the coaching, the strength and the commitment to rattle cages in the All-Ireland series but Pat believes they lack the forward division required to go all the way.

You can argue the merits of the game, which Mikey and Niall enjoyed, but Donegal's attitude in the closing stages of normal time, where they seeemed determined the run down the clock rather than launch one last attack, was strange.

Galway do have the forwards to challenge but after a 'nice' shootout in Salthill, the lack of fight from Roscommon means many questions remain unanswered.

Dublin ate Kildare without salt, ending the game before half-time, so fans could switch over and watch the end of the rugby, but the key to their game is playing the ball in quick to a dominant full-forward in Con O'Callaghan.

Rory reckons James McCarthy's role as captain is also significant, but Pat is not yet convinced, particularly by the Dublin bench.

Kerry won an 83rd Munster title when beating Limerick by 23 points. The provincial system is no more or less broken than last year, but it's still broken. However Pat argues, no other system is going to lead to a utopia where a greater number of counties have a shot at the All-Ireland.
