Roy Keane theory proves there is only one candidate for next Manchester United captain

Manchester United's captaincy debate consumed the Reds prior to Erik ten Hag's arrival.

Last season, Harry Maguire looked like the weight of the world was on his shoulders as he tried to lead the playing squad through an unprecedentedly poor season. Upon Ralf Rangnick's departure, it was expected the England international would be relieved of his duties allowing him to focus on his game.

Surprisingly, Ten Hag made it clear he would not be passing the armband on to another member of the squad. At the time, some sections of the fanbase questioned the Dutchman's decision-making.

Little did they know just how depleted Maguire's game time would eventually become. The 30-year-old was relegated to fourth choice as Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof were chosen ahead of him.

In his absence, Bruno Fernandes took on the role as captain and, for the most part, he has handled the responsibility well. However, there have been occasions when his attitude was called into question.

After the 7-0 drumming at Anfield, Roy Keane laid into the midfielder. "Fernandes’ body language today was nothing short of disgraceful," he told Sky Sports.

"A really talented boy, he's your captain, but his body language, waving his arms, not running back, you wouldn’t be happy with him in your dressing room." Despite disliking his behaviour, Keane has already highlighted how he is the only real contender to takeover from Maguire permanently.

Back in April 2022, the former United captain explained how he felt sorry for Maguire before putting forward his theory on who should have the armband. "I feel sorry for Maguire," he admitted to Sport Bible.
