Roy Keane tells Erik ten Hag how to avoid repeat of Manchester United transfer failure

Roy Keane has highlighted the importance of Erik ten Hag's first summer transfer window at Manchester United.

Keane has been highly critical of United this season, with the former midfielder highlighting a lack of leadership in the dressing room as one of the reasons they've struggled so much. As it stands, the gap between rivals Manchester City and United stands at 25 points.

Keane has emphasised the need for Ten Hag to right the wrongs of the previous years in this summer's transfer window. He said, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's ugly that (the gap between United and the top).

"Whatever way you look at it, the stats, it's not good. We know it's a long way back for Man United but there is a way back and maybe the manager coming in it's a good time because I think it can't get any worse.

"The points total is what worries me, even when you're thinking Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] done well finishing second, it's the points - such a big gap. Big problems for Man United and the issues but of course you've got to look at where Manchester City and Liverpool are, we're talking about rebuilding as if these teams are going to take it easy over the summer, they're going to reinvest, get players in, get stronger.

"[Jurgen] Klopp is staying, Pep [Guardiola] might stay, when he (Ten Hag) comes in, recruitment, he's got to get the right characters, right players and get players out the door because the last few years haven't been good enough. How many times can you say it?

"The biggest worry for me when they've had these disappointments (is) the reaction. I don't think they've shown... there's been a real lack of leadership, talent, there's not enough characters in that dressing room."
