Roy Keane's advice to Kalvin Phillips in his quest for more Man City game time

Roy Keane believes Kalvin Phillip can do more to make the most of his Manchester City opportunities, but the pundit has sympathy over the midfielder's lack of game time.

The Englishman made just 12 Premier League appearances for the treble-winners last year. Very few of those were starts as he struggled to adjust to Pep Guardiola's demands.

The City boss even labelled him 'overweight' at one stage in a frustrating campaign for the former Leeds United man. Phillips will be hoping to follow the likes of Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish by having a better second season at the Etihad. And Keane thinks Phillips needs to 'speed his game up' when he does get chances, even if it can be difficult to gain momentum without regular minutes.

"He's had one or two opportunities but in the few games I have seen him come on for Man City, going back to last season, he needs to speed things up," Keane told ITV Sport. "Sometimes it feels like he's going through the motions.

"He's a really good player and again, you do feel for him. Some of these players, though, they do need a run of games to get some rhythm into their game. He's not getting it. It must be frustrating."

Phillips wants to stay and fight for his place at City despite a disappointing first year. With the European Championships looming, he needs more minutes to ensure he makes Gareth Southgate's squad.

"My intention is to stay there," Phillips said. "We have just won the treble, so there is no reason for me to leave, other than if I am not playing I will obviously have to think about it.
