Roy Keane is right in his scathing criticism of Manchester United this season

Manchester United's midfield came in for a lot of stick following the win over Wolves and the defeat to Tottenham - and for good reason.

United's new season got underway with an underwhelming 1-0 win over Wolves, a match which could have been lost and should have been drawn after Wolves were denied a late penalty. The visitors were meant to be a team in chaos after changing managers five days before the match but were the better and fitter side.

The number of shots Wolves had was verging on astonishing. Only newly-promoted Luton and Sheffield United faced more attempts on goal over the opening weekend and United had Andre Onana to thank for keeping them out.

It was the simplicity of Wolves' play that was so startling. Time after time a forward picked the ball up in the middle of the pitch and simply waltzed unopposed towards the goal. Saturday's defeat at Spurs wasn't much better, with Christian Eriksen's introduction failing to help United wrestle back control of the game.

Erik ten Hag has played a new-look midfield in United's first two games, with summer signing Mason Mount making his debut against Wolves alongside Casemiro in a double-pivot. The relationship has not been an instant success as Mount's high pressing has left the Brazilian completely exposed.

The midfield set-up has come in for the most stick in the aftermath of the opening two games, with Mount's role in the side being questioned. Many called for the need for a dedicated defensive midfielder to be signed before the transfer window closes.
