People always wonder what would happen if an unstoppable force came together with an immovable object. The truth is they spent 12 years together at Manchester United.

Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson brought untold success to Old Trafford, winning seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League between 1993 and 2005. And the midfielder was captain of one of England's most successful ever teams for eight of those 12 years.

Often cited as the link between manager and player, Keane was Ferguson's go-to man at United for so long. And in a dressing room filled with huge egos and intimidating demeanours, the Irishman never shied away from confrontation and was crucial to keeping the elite mentality in tact.

It was seemingly impossible to see Keane at any club other than United, with almost everyone around M16 certain he would retire a Red. But that all came to an abrupt and explosive end in 2005, a season in which he and Ferguson came to blows often.

The relationship started to fracture in the pre-season of that year, with Keane unhappy at the villa he and his family were due to stay in while at the summer camp in Portugal. Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz had arranged accommodation, but the midfielder turned his nose up before staying in the neighbouring village.

"All the staff and players were nicely ensconced in their villas," Ferguson reflected in his autobiography. "But bad news awaited me. Carlos was having a nightmare with Roy.
