Roy Keane accused of being 'too personal' with criticism of Manchester United's Harry Maguire

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has accused Roy Keane of becoming too personal with his criticism of Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Maguire — who will be aiming to help England in their upcoming UEFA Nations League clashes with Hungary (twice), Germany and Italy over the next fortnight — experienced a bitterly disappointing campaign for United this season and was subjected to regular criticism. His performance levels were below his usual standards and he looked a shadow of the player that helped England reach the final of the European Championship last summer.

He was frequently criticised by United fans. Pundits, too, were also critical of his performances throughout the campaign, not least former United midfielder Keane.

The former Republic of Ireland international often criticised the centre-back for his performances and hit back at England manager Gareth Southgate for his decision to call out those who had booed the defender during the Three Lions' 3-0 win over the Ivory Coast at Wembley back in March. But for Agbonlahor, Keane's criticism of Maguire in recent months has become too much.

"Pundits like Roy Keane, who really come for players like Maguire a bit too personally for my liking, and then everyone feels that what Keane says is how it should be," Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

"Then people have made decisions on Maguire because of what pundits like Keane say."
