Ronny Deila doesn't get enough Celtic credit declares Standard lieutenant as Scot opens up on extraordinary coaching journey

It sounds like the start of a mind-boggling football quiz question. When an Ivorian, two Ghanians and a Northern Irishman all hit huge goals for their clubs within a few hours of each other last Sunday what was the link?

The answer is a Scotsman plying his trade in Belgium. Few outside Scottish coaching circles will have heard of Frazer Robertson but the former St Mirren academy coach is tearing it up at Standard Liege under Carl Hoefkens and Yaya Toure. The 42-year-old moved to the Jupiler League club last season to work with ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila after two years at Philadelphia Union.

But it’s the eight years before that, working for the Right To Dream football academy in Ghana, which brings us back to the riddle and explains why the 42-year-old from Johnstone was feeling a huge sense of pride on Sunday evening. First came Ivory Coast ace Simon Adingra’s opener for Brighton in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Liverpool.

Then West Ham wonderkid Mohammed Kudus struck a last-minute leveller against Newcastle and fellow Ghanian Ernest Nuamah slammed home Lyon’s opener against Lorient – his first for his new club.

All three are graduates of Right to Dream after working closely with Robertson. Also on the Scot’s Super Sunday, Northern Irish kid Isaac Price’s last-gasp winner for Standard against Deila’s Club Brugge had him celebrating with Toure on the sidelines.

Back in Ghana this week, Robertson told Record Sport : “That was one of those
weekends that make football so special. Our result, what a dramatic ending! I was on top of Yaya at one point. To be fair the gaffer was away down in the corner with the boys!
