Ronan O'Gara to stay at La Rochelle despite England talks

Ronan O'Gara says he will not be the next England head coach, after confirming his plans to remain in La Rochelle for the foreseeable future.

The former out-half revealed last week that he had spoken to the RFU, who have been making a shortlist of candidates to replace Eddie Jones after the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

Earlier this week, French media reported that O'Gara was set to commit his future to La Rochelle with a three-year extension until 2027.

And the former Munster man has confirmed he's planning to stay in France, having removed himself from consideration with the RFU.

"La Rochelle are keen for me to stay and I am extremely happy to do so. Contracts are being prepared..," O'Gara said in his column with the Irish Examiner.

"Events may dictate otherwise, but the sense is that the RFU will be making their moves after the Six Nations, and there was no good reason to delay my own situation in La Rochelle and mess our president, Vincent Merling around.

"That's why I asked the RFU to remove me from any putative list of head coach options," he added.

O'Gara has been at the French club since 2019, serving as head coach for two seasons before being promoted to director or rugby in 2021.

In three seasons, the 45-year-old has reached two Champions Cup finals, winning the title in 2022, while also helping them reach the final of the Top14 in 2021.
