Rollicking Reeza keeps focus on Lions after title-winning heroics
Lions batter Reeza Hendricks may have been overjoyed with his match-winning 157 for the Lions against the Titans, but prefers to remain grounded.
Hendricks's 15th limited-overs 100 not only saw the Lions chase down 319 against the Titans in their 1-Day Cup final at SuperSport Park on Wednesday, but gave them their first outright 1-Day Cup title success since the 2015/16 season.
It's an innings that could and should catapult Hendricks into the national ODI team reckoning, especially after their painful excursion against Bangladesh at the end of last month.
Hendricks, who last played for the Proteas against the Netherlands last year, said he's just focussing on what he needs to do with the Lions.
"I am here with the Lions, so that's all I can focus on and control. I just need to play my best and whatever happens from there happens," Hendricks said.
"My focus is here and while I would love to be with the Proteas, whatever happens will happen."
The 1-Day Cup was Hendricks' first domestic 50-over final since 2010 where featured for the Knights against the Titans.
He made 21 in the Knights' eight-wicket win in the MTN40 final and was still with the Knights when the Lions cantered home in the 2015/16 1-Day Cup.
He missed last year's washed out final because of national team duty, which made the victory even sweeter.
Hendricks may have a highest List A score of 181, but said the fact his 157 came in a final made it even sweeter for him.
"It's probably one of my better innings. I have made a higher score, but to get a big score in a final, I have to say it's up there with the best," Hendricks said
"I missed out on last year because I wasn't with the team, but it's still a good feeling."
