Rodri wants Scotland revenge as Spain's Hampden whinger makes Euro 20204 qualifying confession

Spain star Rodri says he wants revenge against Scotland.

The Manchester City midfielder famously accused Steve Clarke’s side of playing “rubbish” football after the Spaniards’ 2-0 defeat at Hampden in March. And ahead of Thursday night’s Euro 2024 rematch in Seville, Rodri insists they’ll get their own back.

Clarke’s team top their qualifying group and are on the verge of clinching a spot at the Euros in Germany next summer. Rodri, who scored a Champions League Final winner for City in May, admits Scotland are up there on merit. But he’s convinced that Luis de la Fuente’s squad are a far better outfit now than they were seven months ago. Rodri said: “Scotland aren’t top of the group by luck. They have demonstrated an excellent level in the game so they deserve to be the leader. But the match in Glasgow was very rare. They were clinical with their shots and we weren’t, which is unusual.

“It was one of Spain’s worst games in recent times. Do we want revenge? Yes but we’ll only do it with calmness and concentration from the first minute.

“It’s key for us to score the first goal against Scotland. We’ve been excellent in attack in our last two games against Georgia and Cyprus. But Scotland will be different story. We have to keep the ball and avoid any errors in defence.”

Rodri believes Scotland are now a country to be reckoned with at international level and insists they can cause any team problems. But he’s adamant Spain will be too good for Clarke’s boys in midweek. The midfielder said: “I don’t believe they will come to Spain and be ultra-defensive. That would be perfect for us.
