Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove labouring in Lanzarote

After three races in the gold fleet round at the 49er and 49erFX World Championships in Lanzarote today, Ireland's Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove were unable to improve on their overnight 25th place and trail the field.

The Dublin crew have found the Canary Island wind conditions particularly tricky all week and have paid the price in the results so far.

The best the pair could manage today was 18th out of the 25 boats, but they also scored two other results in nearly last place.

"It's clear that we've found one of our weaknesses, which is good as it's definitely something we can focus on in the next couple of months," Sean Waddilove said after racing ended for the day.

"It's different to Marseille (the Olympic regatta venue), which is a bit more predictable."

Saturday features three more races for the gold fleet, but the chance of Dickson and Waddilove reaching the final 10 for Sunday's medal race is gone.

Ireland’s second crew were unable to break into the gold fleet on Thursday, but lead the 46-boat silver fleet after two strong results on Friday.

Crosshaven’s Séafra Guilfoyle and Johnny Durcan are competing against Dickson and Waddilove to see which boat will take the Irish place for the the men’s single-handed event at the Paris 2024.
