Robbie Savage doubles down on Marcus Rashford red card verdict during Manchester United defeat

Robbie Savage believes Marcus Rashford 'endangered the safety of his opponent' and was rightly sent off during Manchester United's Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen.

The Reds looked to be running away with the game in the first half thanks to a Rasmus Hojlund brace but in the 42nd minute the match was turned on its head when VAR chose to send Rashford off after he caught the leg of Elias Jelert as he attempted to defend the ball. The moment was seen as a turning point with United losing 4-3 with ten men.

On commentary, Savage was quick to adjudge the decision as correct but his comments were met with disbelief from supporters and pundits on X. Ian Wright was among those to disagree with Savage, he posted: "Scholesy and Owen Hargreaves spot on with their analysis. No common sense. How are the commentators saying definite red with such chest."

Nearly 24 hours on from the incident, Savage was asked to explain his thoughts on the call again by Planet Sport Bet. Instead of altering his opinion, the former United youth player chose to double down on his verdict.

He said: "I stand by what I said on commentary on Wednesday night that Marcus Rashford was right to be sent off against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. When the referee goes to look at the incident on the VAR screen, he will be asking himself did Rashford’s actions endanger the safety of an opponent and therefore is it deemed as violent conduct? And I agree with him that the challenge did endanger the safety of the Copenhagen player.
