‘Rivers United fear no foe, can play anywhere’

Coach Stanley Eguma

Fresh from leading Rivers United to a 3-0 defeat of Angola’s Academica do Lobito in their first game of the group stage of the 2023 CAF Confederation Cup, Coach Stanley Eguma has boasted that his boys can match any opposition thrown at them, no matter the venue.

Eguma, who pleaded with Uyo fans to rally behind his team before the game, said his supporters’ turnout was one of the fillips to his team’s success, adding that Rivers United would do everything possible to repay their faith in them.

Speaking at the post-match conference, Eguma said although Port Harcourt is their home ground, they are capable of playing their home games anywhere in the country.

He said: “Uyo is Nigeria and Port Harcourt is also Nigeria and we are a Nigerian team. So, we play anywhere. We have even left Nigeria to play in Benin Republic in the past.

“Though everyone must have their fortress and our home is Port Harcourt, but now that the conditions don’t allow us to play there, we can play anywhere, so far as it is in Nigeria.”

It took Stanley Eguma’s side three minutes to take the lead on Sunday night through Samuel Antwi, who was set up by Paul Odeh.

Odeh then got on the scorer’s sheet two minutes after the break, before Rivers United put the game beyond the visitors through Shedrack Asiegbu’s goal in the 60th minute.

Rivers United’s next game is against Ghana’s Dream FC on December 3 in Kumasi.
