Rivers United beat Club Africain to rekindle quarterfinals hope

Rivers United

Rivers United boosted their hopes of playing in the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup, yesterday, with a 1-0 defeat of Tunisia’s Club Africain at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ were in the third position going into this weekend’s game after a win over Academica do Lobito of Angola in the opening game and a loss at Dream FC of Ghana in their second game, and needed a win yesterday to bounce back to reckoning in Group C.

The hard-fought win came in the 40th minute with skipper Nyima Nwagua getting the goal.

The Nigerian flag bearers now have six points from three matches, same as Club Africain and Dream FC, who though enjoy better goals difference.

Dream FC defeated Academica de Lobito 3-1 away in Angola to move to the same six points with Club Africain and Rivers United.

This means that Rivers United must beat Dreams FC in Uyo and Academica do Lobito in Launda to have hopes of qualifying for the quarterfinals from a tight Group C.

The Port Harcourt club will on Wednesday, December 20, face a rematch with Club Africain in Tunis in continuation of the continental competition.
