'Riot' sees 'tornado team' rush to crisis-hit prison

Inmates at a crisis-hit jail that has had 10 deaths in three months have been reportedly involved in a rot. The incident, on Friday (May 31), led to three prisoners at HMP Parc in Bridgend being taken to hospital.

An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene before it was stood down. G4S, the company managing the facility, said the injuries sustained by the prisoners were not 'life-threatening'.

A spokesperson for the private security giant said: "Staff at HMP Parc swiftly resolved two short-lived incidents involving prisoners on Friday, with no officers injured. Those involved will receive the strongest possible punishments, including criminal prosecution."

G4S said one incident involved around 20 inmates and was brought under control with assistance from the Prison and Probation Service, which is believed to have deployed a 'tornado team' - a unit trained to handle prison riots to the site. A second incident, according to G4S, was separate and saw 'an altercation between three prisoners who required hospital treatment'.

No staff members were harmed during either incident, reports Wales Online.

Further details regarding the extent of any injuries or potential arrests have been requested from both G4S and South Wales Police.

On Wednesday, the death toll at Parc Prison was reported to have reached 10 in over three months. A 38-year-old prisoner, Warren Manners, died suddenly that day in circumstances that police do not believe to be suspicious.

Earlier this month, Edward Argar, the prisons minister, said four of nine recent sudden deaths at Parc were suspected to be drug-related, while one was 'potentially so' and four others weren't.
