M602 closed - LIVE updates as motorway shut after 'serious crash'

Part of the M602 is closed this morning after a 'serious crash'. The motorway is shut eastbound between junction one at the M60 and junction two at Salford Royal Hospital.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) says two buses were involved in the incident shortly before 1am today (June 1), with one of the two vehicles overturning. Two people were taken to hospital by ambulance following the incident.

Police are expected to remain at the scene throughout this morning. National Highways first reported the incident in a post on X at 1.09am.

Traffic on the westbound carriageway was also stopped overnight, but has since reopened. Police investigation work has been taking place since after 2am. The latest update from National Highways at 7.57am added: "Police are continuing their investigation and the road will likely remain closed throughout the morning."

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: "Just before 1am this morning (Saturday, June 1), three fire engines from Stretford, Salford Central and Eccles fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh, were called to reports of road traffic collision involving two buses on the M602 between junction 1 and 2. Crews arrived quickly at the scene where one of the buses had rolled over.

"Firefighters made the vehicles safe and colleagues from North West Ambulance Service took two people to the hospital. Firefighters were in attendance for around one hour and thirty minutes.”
