Rio Ferdinand tells Joao Cancelo how he could have prevented Liverpool FC goal vs Man City

Rio Ferdinand says Joao Cancelo should have ensured he had protection around him when he tried to deal with Mo Salah before the Liverpool star spun and sprinted to fire home the winning goal against Manchester City.

The full-back was marshalling the Egyptian when goalkeeper Alisson sent a huge counter-attacking ball over to the attacker. Cancelo tried to intercept the ball but was outmanoeuvred by Salah, who pivoted to hand himself a one-on-one with Ederson.

Ferdinand questioned why Cancelo was left on his own to deal with the superstar, explaining he should have been urging his City colleagues to get back and help. Speaking on YouTube show FIVE, he said: “I was thinking, ‘What was he doing there on his own like that, one v one against Salah’.

“He should have been screaming at someone in his team ‘get back and help me because I can’t deal with Salah on my own. If Salah gets this ball at any point I’m curtains’.

“His best attributes are on the ball, Cancelo, and that’s the mistake he made. It went under his feet and the rest is history.” Ferdinand continued to hail Cancelo’s abilities with his feet but suggested his defensive frailties were laid bare in the incident.

"Cancelo is great with the ball but defensively one v one, that’s not his best attribute… there’s still improvements to be made,” he added. “But he doesn't get left isolated a lot like that so he’s fine. What he does with the ball far outweighs what he does defensively.
