Rio Ferdinand makes angry Manchester United confession after Jesse Lingard situation

Club hero Rio Ferdinand has revealed his initial anger over the way he was ushered out of Manchester United, albeit underlined he is “over it now.”

The former England defender was speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel about the non-send-off for Jesse Lingard during his last match at Old Trafford as a United player. The midfielder was left on the bench in this month's 3-0 win over Brentford as Edinson Cavani got the nod to say his goodbyes instead, with Fred and Phil Jones also coming on.

It led to an aggrieved Instagram post from Lingard’s brother, who criticised the club for being “classless”. Ferdinand sympathised with the player, and explained how he believes United have a track record of failing to honour their greats.

He said: “I think United are one of the worst at doing it. You see clubs abroad when players who have given big chunks of their career, been successful to the clubs, the send-offs they get are phenomenal and rightly so.

“United don’t really treat it with the kind of importance you see at other clubs. I’m not saying you deserve it but sometimes when you feel you’ve given a lot of yourself to a football club, it’s a nice way to go.”

Explaining about how he felt when the club indicated he would be leaving Old Trafford, Ferdinand added: “It happens - I was actually p*ssed off for a while with the way I got told, I’m over it now, it’s cool.”

He is not the first former United player to publicly criticise the club over their handling of exits. In December, Zlatan Ibrahimovic slammed United over Wayne Rooney’s relatively quiet departure in 2017.
