Ridvan Yilmaz can ignite Rangers left back battle as nine-in-a-row hero warns Borna Barisic could go STALE

David Robertson admits he didn’t have much competition for his left back slot at Rangers during six success-strewn seasons at Ibrox in the club’s nine-in-a-row 90s.

But he’s delighted to see current boss Michael Beale will have a decision to make between Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz for the same berth when next season comes rolling around. Barisic, at 30, the experienced campaigner with five years in Glasgow under his belt or Yilmaz, eight years younger and playing with the verve and energy of a player desperately trying to make a good impression after an injury-hit first season at Ibrox?

That’s the choice Beale, who is currently re-shaping the squad he helped build under Steven Gerrard then inherited from Gio van Bronckhorst when he returned in November, will have to make and Robertson believes it can only be good for the club that one man no longer feels he’s a certainty to be picked every week.

The former Aberdeen defender, an Ibrox regular between 1991 and 1997, said: “When I was at the club, I more or less played all the time as there wasn’t much competition for my position. That meant I had to motivate myself every single week and while I managed to do that - at the time you simply had to perform at the top of your game at Ibrox because losing games wasn’t an option - it’s not as easy as you’d think, particularly after a player has been at a club for a few years.

“Borna has been there a while now, and I’m not just saying this about him, but in general, the longer a player stays at the same club the chances are that he can become a bit stale.
