Ricky Hatton names record-breaking target for Manchester City this season

Ricky Hatton has backed Manchester City to create history this season.

The former world champion boxing became synonymous with the club throughout his career, donning a City badge during his ringwalks and gaining fervent support from fans. Hatton was in attendance as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted the Champions League trophy in Istanbul for the first time and completed their treble.

City have begun this season in equally imperious style, earning maximum points and winning the UEFA Super Cup. The club will be aiming to replicate their treble-winning success this season , plus the possibility of adding the Super Cup and Club World Cup to their medal haul, and Hatton has backed the team to break records and write their names into football history.

“I think they’ve got a good chance, when you see how they’re flying at the minute, Hatton told MEN Sport. “I think City have set a benchmark with that treble. They’ve added to the squad, just like everyone else has.

“I know the [Champions League] was a little bit nip and tuck. You’d expect that in a Champions League final. They’ve got that confidence now they’ve done the treble. People were saying, ‘you’ll never do the treble, you’ll never win the Champions League’. We’ve done the lot now.

“I think that gives them confidence going into the new season and there’s every chance we could [repeat it]. And that would be the first in history because United won the treble but they didn’t do it two years on the bounce. So that’s probably the goal for City, the only way you can better it is by doing it again.”

Hatton is the subject of a new Sky documentary and was speaking ahead of The Box Off
