Rey Mysterio: WWE legend discusses retirement plans ahead of 20th anniversary

This week WWE will celebrate Rey Mysterio’s twentieth anniversary since making his debut for the company, and the star has opened up on his plans for the future.

The 47-year-old made his WWE bow on 25 July 2002 and WWE will mark the anniversary with a special celebration on this coming Monday’s episode of Raw, which will come live from Madison Square Garden in New York.

Rey is scheduled to team with son Dominik to face The Judgement Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest in the continuation of their feud, where we could see a dramatic turn from the younger Mysterio.

Rey has already spoken previously about Dominik carrying the family legacy when his in-ring days are over and has now revealed he’d like to pass down his iconic mask when he finally hangs up his 619’s.

Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, ahead of Monday’s big milestone show, Rey proudly spoke about his son and the possibility of passing his mask on to the next generation.

My next goal is to eventually be able to look for a great plan of retirement. I also want to make sure my son is set. I’m really enjoying his evolution. We’re still seeing a lot of growth with Dominik. I always have to remind myself he hasn’t been doing this for very long. He’s doing very well, and I push him to do better every single time he’s in the ring, I want to hang up the mask down the road, and hopefully see Dominik carry that mask and continue with the Mysterio legacy.

With SummerSlam around the corner, it will be just two years since Dominik made his in-ring debut, losing to Seth Rollins in a Street Fight, which was seen as one of the matches of the night. Since then, the Mysterios have gone on to make history by becoming the first-ever father and son WWE Tag Team
