Rayan Ait-Nouri was benched for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ defeat to Crystal Palace due to illness.

The former Angers left-back has become a mainstay in Lage’s line-up since dislodging Marcal in October, but he hasn’t featured in Wolves’ last two matches.

Bruno Lage rested several players for Wolves’ 1-0 defeat to West Ham last weekend, but Ait-Nouri was expected to return against Palace at Molineux.

Marcal again started at left wing-back, with Ki-Jana Hoever preferred to Jonny Castro Otto on the right side.

Lage criticised Hoever - who went off injured after 25 minutes - and some of the club’s other youngsters in his post-match press conference.

But Ait-Nouri, 20, wasn’t left out due to his attitude and application on the training ground.

“He has a problem, a virus,” Lage revealed. “He was sick and went two days without training. That is why we went with Marcal.

“He is a fantastic player. I think he was one of our best players on the pitch. He created chances and did well on the left side.”
