Residents left horrified after quiet road becomes violent crime scene

A quiet corner of Trafford has been transformed into a crime scene in events neighbours say is something ‘we’ve never had’.

Ambulance crews and cops rushed to a passageway between Kingsway Park and Skye Road in Urmston yesterday evening, after hearing reports that a man had been stabbed. Hours on from the incident at 5:18pm on Monday (June 19), officers have held a 42-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detectives kept the area sealed off this morning (June 20) as rain lashed down on Urmston, and a quiet sense of shock also fell. Now, police are appealing for the public’s help to find out what happened.

“Officers received a call from colleagues at NWAS at 5.18pm on Monday 19 June 2023, to reports a man who had sustained stab wounds,” a statement from GMP said. “He was taken to hospital for surgery and his condition is described as critical but stable.

“A 42 year old man was detained a short time later and is currently in custody for questioning on suspicion of attempted murder. If anyone can help, please dial 101 or contact the independent charity - Crimestoppers - anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting log number 3038 of 19 June 2023.”

The sense of disquiet could be felt on the residential roads which surround the walkway, in the shadow of the M60.

“We’ve never had anything like this,” Michael Hickey, who has lived on Skye Road for 51 years, said. “It’s pretty quiet. On the other hand, we do know it goes on. It’s a passageway where a bit of drug dealing goes on.

“We have seen it going on. There are loads hanging around in the day and the evening.”

“I heard the sirens,” added Paul Motteshead. “I went out later on and it was taped off.”
