Relief for Mark Bonner with Cambridge United near full strength for Sheffield Wednesday clash

Mark Bonner has a near full-strength squad to choose from for Cambridge United's trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Midfielder Liam O’Neil is in contention to start after missing their goalless draw with Shrewsbury Town through illness.

Bournemouth loanee Sam Sherring, who also sat-out the Shrews fixture because of concussion, and James Brophy are available for selection as the U's seek to halt a three-match winless run.

Cambridge head coach Bonner, who has labelled Owls captain Barry Bannan the best player in League One, said: “Everybody is available and for the first time in months, we’ve probably got more than the matchday squad of 18 available.

“It’s a nice situation to be in which sets us up nicely for the end of the season.”

Tomorrow's clash will come too soon for goalkeeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle (knee).

It will be Cambridge's first visit to S6 since 1998 when Trevor Benjamin gave the U's a 1-0 League Cup win.

“It’s a long time since we were there,” admitted Bonner. “I was there the night Trevor Benjamin nicked the ball off Kevin Pressman and tapped it in for a 1-0 win and Carbone and Di Canio were playing.

“They are certainly games you look back on, and supporters that come this weekend that were there, will be loving the fact that we’re there.

"And we have to try to do that as a team - love the fact that we’re in these games and try to make the most of them.”

Cambridge are 13th in the table but have struggled on the road this season, winning only four times on their travels.
