Reddish major incident LIVE: Cordon remains in place after 'hazardous materials' found with evacuated residents STILL unable to return home

Emergency services remain on the scene in Stockport this morning and residents remain evacuated from their homes after 'hazardous materials' were discovered in a house - sparking a major incident.

Bomb disposal units, forensic officers, police and fire crews swarmed Middleton Road in Reddish yesterday (Thursday) following the discovery. Police said the house was first searched 'in response to intelligence about the manufacture of illegal fireworks'.

A huge cordon was put in place and a major incident was declared. 'Worried' residents 'frantically packed their bags' as they were evacuated from their homes.

A 50-year-old was arrested and taken into police custody. He was held under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act.

This morning, emergency crews remain on the scene. Crews have worked through the night to 'remove the hazardous materials without endangering any property or person, but this is taking some time'.

A cordon remains in place. Evacuated residents have not yet been able to return home and people should continue to avoid the area.

The latest post on the GMP Heatons & Reddish Facebook page, issued on Friday morning, said: "#UPDATE | GMP and partner agencies worked throughout the night but efforts to recover the hazardous material and dispose of them safely are ongoing.

"The cordon remains in place so displaced residents can not yet return to their homes and members of the public should continue to avoid the area."
