Red Bull’s Christian Horner warns of ‘big challenge’ which could ‘wreak havoc’ on Formula 1

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says that freight issues could ‘wreak havoc’ on Formula 1 in 2022.

Transporting car parts equipment around the world throughout the season is an enormous undertaking for all ten F1 teams, and with the series set to run an unprecedented 23 races this year, the scale of the challenge has only increased.

The Haas team missed a day’s testing in Bahrain before the start of the campaign after their goods were held at an airport Istanbul, while all MotoGP team’s missed a day of practice at before their Argentinean race due to delays.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent increases in the cost of living have caused shipping costs to grow in the early months of the year, and with more grand prixs scheduled than ever before, the risk posed by delays has only been heightened.

Horner says that the ‘very complicated calendar’ will make things more difficult for every team in 2022, and believes that an increase in F1’s cost cap may be required to alleviate any issues.

‘It’s a big challenge,’ Horner is quoted as saying by GP Fans. We have a very complicated calendar and there are very tight timescales, and with some of the triple-headers, and double-headers coming up late in the year, obviously losing freight for a period of time could wreak havoc.’

‘So that’s one issue that we’re working, obviously, very closely with the logistic guys and Formula 1 with, but then, of course, there’s the cost element and I think freight is close to doubling this year.’
