Reason for Bolton Wanderers striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's Iceland omission pinpointed

Bolton Wanderers striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has been omitted from the latest Iceland squad.

The 30-year-old forward joined Wanderers in the January transfer window from Millwall. He joined the Whites on an 18-month contract on a free transfer.

It proved to be a successful move for the forward, who played just once in the first half of the campaign with the Lions. After getting his fitness up to speed, Bodvarsson scored seven times in 21 games, including the club's last strike of the campaign in the 4-2 victory over Fleetwood Town.

Bodvarsson has scored four goals in 64 appearances for his country and it was expected he would be given another chance to add to those tallies this summer. Iceland have four games in June against Israel, Albania and San Marino, a combination of Uefa Nations League and friendly fixtures.

However, when the Iceland squad for these clashes was announced, Bodvarsson's name was not to be seen. A report from Icelandic news outlet mbl.is has outlined that head coach Arnar Vidarsson has not selected the Wanderers striker for the upcoming matches and explained why at a press conference.

Wanderers' season concluded at the end of April, with more than a month between that and upcoming international fixtures in early June. It was therefore decided due to a lack of games and training in the meantime to omit Bodvarsson from the squad

The report read: "The striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson was not chosen this time and Arnar Þór said it was a difficult decision to leave him. However, he played his last game with Bolton Wanderers at the end of April and the soon-to-be national match window will start at the beginning
