Real Madrid 3-1 Man City live Pep Guardiola reaction as Blues exit Europe following Mbappe hat-trick

Manchester City lost to Real Madrid in the play-off round of the Champions League tonight, exiting the competition before the last-16 stage.

City surrendered a lead in the first leg 2-1 with just four minutes of normal time remaining and were dealt another blow when Erling Haaland was unable to play the second leg due to his knee injury picked up at the weekend.

City went behind within three minutes as Kylian Mbappe scored early on, and John Stones had to be withdrawn in another injury blow before ten minutes had been played.

Mbappe scored a second before half-time to kill the tie, and wrapped up his hat-trick in the second half as City offered almost no resistance. Nico Gonzalez scored his first City goal in injury time but Madrid were thoroughly deserving of their progression.

"It's not just Mbappe, a lot of players, a fantastic team. Congratulate them, they deserve to go through, we don't deserve. We didn't make a good Champions League season. Accept it and fight to be here next season.
