Reading FC's chances of relegation compared with Hull, Sunderland and others for 2022/23 season

Reading FC’s chances of being relegated from the Championship this season have been determined.

FiveThirtyEight have predicted the outcome for the 2022/23 campaign, taking into account the end-of-season probabilities for all 24 Championship clubs. Using their own Global Club Soccer Rankings, the site determines each team’s chance of winning the Championship, achieving promotion, finishing in the play-offs and relegation.

The Global Club Soccer Rankings are determined based on a system in which "every team has an offensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to score against an average team on a neutral field, and a defensive rating that represents the number of goals it would be expected to concede," the website reads.

"These ratings, in turn, produce an overall SPI rating, which represents the percentage of available points — a win is worth 3 points, a tie worth 1 point, and a loss worth 0 points — the team would be expected to take if that match were played over and over again."

Unfortunately, it is not good news for Reading FC. FiveThirtyEight predict Royals to finish 22nd this season, despite picking up 53 points, 12 more than they achieved last term.

Paul Ince’s side have been handed a 24 per cent chance of being relegated, with only Wigan Athletic and Rotherham United scoring worse with 31 and 35 per cent respectively. Both Sunderland and Hull City are tipped to narrowly avoid relegation by achieving just one point more than Reading.

At the other end of the table, Norwich City are favourites to finish top of the table. The probability of the Canaries winning the Championship is at 23 per cent, with Watford expected to finish runners-up with a 19 per cent chance of lifting the
