Raphael Varane's brother slams comparisons with Manchester United star

Raphael Varane's half brother, Jonathan, has hit back at comparisons made between him and the Manchester United defender.

The 22-year-old is looking to forge his own football career but finds himself in a tricky position given the huge achievements of his older brother in the professional game.

The more established Varane is a household name across Europe with four Champions League titles and a World Cup victory under his belt, while Jonathan has just broken into the Sporting Gijon first-team.

Jonathan, who plays in midfield as opposed to at centre-back like his brother, has already fulfilled his dream of making it as a professional footballer, though his own success is often unfairly judged when compared with Raphael.

In a recent interview, the youngster was asked about the success of his older half brother and hit back at the incessant comparisons made between the pair.

“I am not my brother because I am Jonathan Varane,” he told AS. “(Raphael) has had an impact on my career. When they see Jonathan Varane, they actually see Raphael. I have had to put up with it since I was little.

“My name is Jonathan and I want to be myself, to distance myself from that image of my brother; I am different from him, I like to repeat that.”
