Neighbours' desperate struggle to save dying mum killed in front of her children

A neighbour living on the street where a woman was stabbed to death in front of her children has described how residents tried in vain to save her. The M.E.N. reported earlier that a manhunt was underway after the woman, 35, was killed in Little Hulton, Salford, in the early hours.

Police have since arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with the woman's death. He is currently in custody for questioning. A murder investigation has been launched following the incident on Dukesgate Grove, where witnesses reported seeing police arrive on the scene at around 3am.

Residents have been speaking of their shock over the 'terrible' incident, saying it's a street where they 'all know each other'. One neighbour, who didn't want to be named, said she was woken at around 2.30am by 'screaming' in the street and she and others went outside to see if they could help.

The woman, who lives a couple of doors down from the victim, said she went outside and found a woman with what she said was a 'stab wound' to her chest.

She said: “I was there, I was on the phone to the ambulance. We were all there looking after her. There was four of us and a lad was given her compressions on her chest.”

The resident said she stayed with the woman while speaking to the emergency services. “It’s horrible - really, really sad,” she added.

Others living nearby have also shared their shock at the events, with one saying 'something always happens on this street, but nothing this bad'.

“This is a first for this street," another person said. "I couldn’t sleep. I don’t want to stay here and I’ve been here 10 years."

Dukesgate Grove has been cordoned off throughout the morning, with drivers and pedestrians unable to pass the scene.
