Raphael Varane has given Manchester United another late transfer priority

Wouldn't you know it, as another deadline day looms Manchester United are scrambling to avert disaster.

However many improvements Erik ten Hag makes on the pitch, costly incompetency remains rife within the walls at Old Trafford. And it looked like it was all going so well.

Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund were all secured before the season began but the weaknesses in United's squad construction didn't take long to show. While Onana is already looking like an excellent addition, the same can't be said for the other two.

Mount will be sidelined until after the international break and he isn't the only new signing with issues. Hojlund has been injured since he arrived in Manchester and it's not yet clear if he will make his debut against Arsenal this weekend as indicated by the club.

United were in dire need of a proven goal-scorer to bring a misfiring attack to life but instead opted to invest in potential for the future rather than quality for the present and he is yet to make his debut. United have looked flat and uninspiring going forward in their first three matches.
