Rangers stun Celtic to lift Glasgow Cup with dramatic stoppage time comeback at Broadwood

There was late, late drama in the Glasgow Cup final as Rangers women came from behind to stun Celtic.

The Gers found themselves trailing at Broadwood after Amy Gallacher had opened the scoring from the spot in the first half. That looked like it was going to be enough for Fran Alonso’s side as the game ticked towards full-time with their slender lead still intact. However, as 90 minutes were up, Kirsty Maclean levelled things up and it looked for all the world that penalties were going to decide the outcome.

One did, but it didn’t come in a shootout. In the 97th minute of injury time, the Light Blues were awarded a spot kick and a chance to claim the silverware. Kirsty Howatt made no mistake from 12 yards, firing home to earn new Rangers boss Jo Potter a first trophy since taking over from Malky Thomson in the summer.

She said: It is always nice to come away with a win, obviously we left it late, later than what I would have liked initially. I wasn’t happy in the first half, particularly how we settled in our shape and our manner going into the game, I thought we started really slow.

“Coming in at half time we were still in the game at 1-0, and then you could see the complete difference in the two halves. We started the second half a lot stronger, we just grew into the game which was really nice to see.

“I said to the girls afterwards to not particularly play well and come away with a win I think is huge, so that will breed confidence in the group and it definitely breeds confidence around the camp and belief in what we are doing, so we are definitely going in the right direction.”
