Rangers star Steven Davis was targeted by Brendan Rodgers during Liverpool stint, claims ex-Gers man

David Healy has claimed Brendan Rodgers was keen on Steven Davis during his time in charge at Liverpool.

The Rangers veteran has recently put pen to paper to stay on at Ibrox for another year as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men bid to reach the Champions League group stages and recapture the Premiership title back from rivals Celtic. The 37-year-old was a key figure for club and country once again making over 40 appearances and helping the Light Blues reach the Europa League final in Seville.

The midfielder won admirers during his time south of the border with Southampton but ex-Rangers man Healy reckons had he been Spanish, Italian, French or from Argentina then there would have been plenty more noise about him. The Linfield boss has described Davis as one of the best midfielders he has ever played with and a dream for a striker as he made a big transfer claim over former Celtic boss Rodgers during his time at Liverpool.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, he said: “Davo certainly isn’t a bawler and shouter.

“He leads by example through his professionalism and the way he trains.

“When he is on it, when he is at his best, he plays in tight little areas and around people.

“There are some players who wouldn’t even be aware that the space was on but Davo is.

“He is one of the best midfielders I have played with.

“If he had been Spanish, Italian, French or from Argentina, journalists and people would have raved about him.

“If he’d come into the English Premier League from Argentina instead of being from Cullybackey then he’d have been announced a better player.

“I know Brendan Rodgers had a sniff around him when he was the manager at Liverpool. He ended up signing Joe Allen around that time instead.
