Rangers receive striker transfer tip as star's link to Ibrox addressed after lighting up Wembley

There's links to Rangers and the English Championship - but Ross Stewart is just glad to have booked Sunderland's passage to the latter.

The former Albion Rovers striker has enjoyed a sharp rise up the football ladder and achieved another fine moment on Saturday, netting the winner during a 2-0 play-off final win over Wycombe Wanderers.

It ends the Black Cats' four-year stint in England's third tier, coming six years after Stewart signed for Albion Rovers from junior football.

Scoring 26 goals over the campaign, the striker said on Sky Sports: "You couldn't have chosen a better way to do it. Its an unbelievable feeling. You look at that crowd, that's what it's all about.

"I think we are a confident group but at the same time we respected our opponents. I think you saw we were excellent today and it was thoroughly deserved. I'm struggling for words."

Former Hamilton and current Sunderland boss Alex Neil will be desperate to keep him for next term's Championship rub, but there are other interested suitors.

Rangers and a clutch of Championship clubs have been linked with the ex-Rovers frontman and Hearts battler Andy Halliday believes it's recognition Stewart deserves.

The former Rangers midfielder told Grosvenor Sport: "People will be taking notice of Ross Stewart because of how well he's done this season - I think his career has been fascinating.

"The success that Sunderland have had this season has been down to him and he deserves to be linked with clubs like Rangers.

"I don't see any doubt whatsoever that he's earned his move if a move does come along and I'm sure he'd be a good signing for anyone with the goal record he has."
