Rangers 'not working' for Neil McCann as he serves it up straight and uses Connor Barron to back up fears

Neil McCann has identified what he thinks was all wrong for Rangers in their goalless draw with Hearts and has admitted his surprise at the amount of responsibility placed on new signing Connor Barron.

Despite both sides having good enough chances to win the game, the opening match of the new Premiership season at Tynecastle ended in a goalless draw, with Hearts dominating the first half and the Gers edging the proceedings in the second 45 minutes. Philippe Clement rued his team's lack of physicality and bravery after the game but argued that a point on the road against a side that romped to a third place finish last season is not to be scoffed at.

But pundit McCann - who turned out for both sides during his playing career- was less than impressed with the away team's display in Gorgie and reckons boss Clement has plenty on his plate to be concerned about. Speaking on Sportscene, he said: "I felt that Rangers did not have any control of the match.

"There are elements of the team that are still looking soft. Philippe Clement has been talking about needing to be better in duels, and I can only imagine that's about the two centre backs dealing with pace in behind. He's also talked about not playing with risk and bravery and being demanding to get people on the ball.

"That fell to young Connor Barron, starting in his first game in the Premiership for Rangers. I don't think anyone would have expected Connor to come into the Rangers team and be the main protagonist to start attacks. There is a lot of stuff that is not working for me with Rangers. It is early but they have not won a pre-season game and have thrown away two points today. They need to get things into traction quick."
