Rangers legend has 'fingers crossed' over star's Ibrox involvement but warns of 'tough' breakthrough assignment

Alex Lowry has made a positive impression in 2022 - and Charlie Miller reckons bigger things could await the Uddingston teenager at Rangers.

The midfielder has established himself as one of the Premiership club's brightest talents after initially shining in their Lowland League 'B' team.

His senior debut was marked by a goal and Man of the Match performance against Stirling Albion in the Scottish Cup. He's since been involved in both Europa League and Scottish Cup final squads after his January bow.

Overall Lowry - a graduate of Motherwell's Braidhurst high school - has scored twice with two assists over seven games and has penned a new deal until 2025.

Miller was once like the 18-year-old, breaking through from the Ibrox academy as an attacking midfielder, with the 46-year-old's Light Blues stint lasting six years after a 1993 debut.

Light Blues boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is a former teammate of Miller's, and the latter hopes a big 2022/23 awaits Lowry.

Speaking of the star from Uddingston, he said: "If the wee man is going to be part of the plans next season in terms of starting, fingers crossed he is.

"You want homegrown players coming through and into the team.

"Hopefully the wee man is ready as he will need to realise how tough it is going to be."

Miller was speaking after taking part in the Billy Drummond Memorial match against Cambuslang Rangers legends for a Rangers legends squad, and it wasn't kind on his legs.

He added: "They are not great and they always feel worse the next morning. It's not so easy. It's very difficult!

"It's not about trying to play. The head knows what it wants to do but the legs have just gone."
