Rangers go 'very hard' on Craig McPherson as internal investigation into headbutt on Celtic women's boss stings

An internal investigation at Rangers “was hard” on coach Craig McPherson after his headbutt on Celtic boss Fran Alonso, according to Rangers women’s manager Malky Thomson.

McPherson is serving a six-game ban for the incident with the Spaniard at Broadwood last month which came after a last-gasp equaliser from Celtic. It was the first SWPL game to be shown live on Sky Sports with the Rangers hierarchy irked at the besmirching of reputation which came on the back of the headbutt, with video footage and images clearly capturing McPherson approaching Alonso from behind.

There was a private apology from McPherson to Alonso with the Celtic manager consistently keen to play down what had happened. “The incident was uncharacteristic,” stressed Thomson. “The club were very hard on all of us. Craig is an extension of me. We have had our own investigation into it which will remain private and we have had our own talks from the directors down. Craig will serve his ban and then he will be back.

“We have a code of conduct that we must adhere to. Any incident that happens means an investigation and we knew that immediately after it happened.

“It has been dealt with in-house and then there has also been a six-game ban which was a hard one. The club acted right away and put their own process in place.”
