Rangers fans set for Champions League ticket boost as Union Saint Gilloise open talks over venue change

Rangers fans are set for a huge Champions League ticket boost for their club’s crunch eliminator against Belgian shock troops Union Saint Galloise.

Record Sport can reveal talks have begun this afternoon to find a new location for the first leg tie after Union bosses decided not to stage the game at their own historic Stade Joseph Marien – which holds just over 9,000 supporters. We understand discussions between both clubs are now under way to identify a new venue for the August 2 showdown.

And it’s almost certain that switching it to an alternative venue, most likely in Brussels city centre, will enable thousands more travelling supporters to make the trip. The unique Joseph Marien sits in a forest on the outskirts of the Belgian capital and a visit there has been described as ‘taking a step back in time’ following Union Saint Galloise ’s fairytale comeback to the Jupiler Pro League after a 48 year absence.

But club bosses accept a more modern area will be required for their first ever attempt at making it into UEFA ’s elite competition. Rangers are bidding to qualify for the group stage for the first time since 2010.
