Rangers 'delighted' to face Celtic at Sydney Super Cup as Ibrox club break silence on controversial friendly

Rangers have confirmed they will face rivals Celtic in the Sydney Super Cup in November.

The Ibrox side have broken their silence on the controversial venture after fans of both clubs reacted angrily to the rivals competing in a friendly in Australia.

The exhibition event will also feature A-League sides Sydney FC and West Sydney Wanderers.

On Tuesday night, Rangers said they were working on their plans for the November international break and would neither confirm nor deny their involvement in the event Down Under as a veil of secrecy was drawn around Ibrox after their rivals had broken cover.

But now the the Premiership champions have officially announced their involvement after news confirming details was released by the competition organisers in the early hours of Wednesday.

An Ibrox statement said: "Rangers will return to Australia this November with the club delighted to have accepted an invitation to the inaugural Sydney Super Cup, which will include the first ever international Old Firm fixture.

"With domestic action taking an extended break for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Light Blues will travel Down Under for two hugely exciting matches in front of what is sure to be an outstanding Rangers support of both locals and those travelling from further afield.

"Gers kick-off with a clash against Western Sydney Wanderers on Wednesday, November 16.

"Then, on Sunday 20 November, they will take part in the first Old Firm match to take place outside of Glasgow, with Celtic the opposition.
