Rangers coach Craig McPherson headbutt 'out of character' as Michael Beale reveals ongoing talks

Michael Beale insists Craig McPherson’s actions after the Celtic vs Rangers women’s game were “out of character.”

The Ibrox coach appeared to aim a headbutt at Hoops boss Fran Alonso after the final whistle, and the Spaniard alleges McPherson called him a “little rat.” The Gers had just been denied all three points after Caitlin Hayes’ strike nine minutes into time added on, that sparked wild scenes of celebration on the Celtic bench. It was Alonso’s reaction to the goal that apparently angered McPherson.

He now faces a Scottish FA disciplinary hearing after being cited by the governing body. Police Scotland have also opened an investigation, but Record Sport revealed this week that Alonso does not wish to press charges against McPherson, but has demanded an apology. McPherson has been heavily criticised for his actions with calls for him to be sacked and even given a “lifetime ban” from some quarters.

Beale confirmed discussions are ongoing between the club, McPherson and the SFA following the SWPL 1 derby clash: "I haven't seen it live and I know that the SFA and Rangers have an ongoing discussion around it.

"All I would say on Craig is that's it's out of character for him. Everyone that knows him in Scotland as a man, knows it's out of character.

"I haven't seen it since but I've obviously been told about it. I haven't personally spoken to him. That's away with the SFA, they've cited him and those discussions are going on and it would be unfair for me to comment more on that."
