'Rangers can win Europa League' roars legend who is 'bursting with pride'

Rangers legend Ally McCoist says his old club can win the Europa League this season after they swept aside Red Star Belgrade 3-0 at Ibrox last night.

And the 59-year-old from East Kilbride says he was bursting with pride as Rangers gave themselves a clear lead with the round of 16 first-leg victory.

James Tavernier got Rangers off and running with an 11th-minute penalty, before Alfredo Morelos and Leon Balogun added strikes to put them seemingly on the verge of a quarter-final place.

But while McCoist - who was manager when they were dropped down to the bottom of SPFL in 2011 - says Rangers have come a long way in the last 10-15 years, he warned there is a long way to go, backed up by Red Star having three goals disallowed via VAR and a penalty saved by Allan McGregor last night.

Speaking on Sky Sports, McCoist said: "I thought the Dortmund games [in the previous round] would be difficult. It was a tremendous performance over there and, in the second half at Ibrox, the old stadium was absolutely rocking.

"Last night it was absolutely tremendous against a very good team. They had two or three goals disallowed, correctly, by VAR. Allan McGregor had a wonderful save from the penalty.

"But for Rangers to win it, it fills me with enormous pride. Look at the last 10-15 years, the journey, the unfortunate times the club has been through.

"I'm just so pleased for the club and the fans that we're now back competing at a good level in Europe. Those nights like last night make it all worthwhile. It was special."
