Rangers and Airdrie legend Ian McMilan dead at 92: Diamonds pay tribute

Airdrie have paid tribute to former player Ian McMillan, who passed away yesterday aged 92.

Described as “Airdrieonians’ most celebrated son and the man widely recognised as the greatest ever to grace the famous Diamond shirt” McMillan was also a hero for Rangers, and was nicknamed ‘The Wee Prime Minister’.

McMillan was born on March 18, 1931, grew up a stone’s throw away from Airdrie’s original Broomfield Stadium, and signed professional forms after leaving Airdrie Academy aged 17.

In April 1952, McMillan gained the first of five full Scotland caps while at Airdrie, and Rangers signed him in 1958 in a deal worth £10,300.

During his six years at Ibrox, McMillan won three Scottish Cup and two League Cups, an made an appearance in the 1961 European Cup-Winners’ Cup final.

Airdrie brought him back in 1964, but persistent injury problems forced his retiral from playing in the summer of 1967.

Returning as manager between 1970 and 1976, McMillan led the club to a Texaco Cup final appearance, won the 1974 Division Two title, and reached the 1975 Scottish Cup final.

He also served Airdrie as vice-chairman and n 2002 was named Honorary President.

A statement issued by Airdrie read: “A wonderful footballer and a wonderful man, Ian will be sadly missed by everyone involved with Airdrieonians FC.

“Ian filled so many roles with the club, always with great distinction.

“Our thoughts are with Ian’s family and many, many friends at this sad time. His loss is a profound one for Airdrieonians Football Club.”
